Knee pads are part of the compulsory safety equipment worn by speed skaters to protect them from injury during racing and training. If you already have your own shin pads from a sport like volleyball then feel free to use them instead.
What are they for? To protect knees when a skater falls on them. Falls and crashes happen and, if your knees hit the ice… it hurts! Knee pads will help you get back up and keep skating.
Knee pads are usually worn under the skinsuit, but we recommend you have another layer under them, next to the skin. Many younger and newer skaters wear thermal leggings under their skinsuits to keep warm, which will help the kneepads feel more comfortable. When putting them on, make sure the pad is in the front and the hole in the back.
Compulsory safety equipment that MUST BE WORN AT ALL TIMES when participating in speed skating events and training. Skaters will not be permitted on the ice without it. These items are:
- neck guard
- knee pads
- shin pads
- cut-proof suit for higher grades
