Shin pads are part of the compulsory safety equipment worn by speed skaters to protect them from injury during racing and training. If you already have your own shin pads from a sport like soccer/football then feel free to use them instead.

Shin pads are best worn under the skinsuit to prevent them from coming off when they are needed most.

What are they for? To protect shins from blades! Crashes happen, skaters get tangled up or sometimes simply accidentally get a blade hit their shin from the skater in front. And we know they work because some suits have cuts where this has happened!

Compulsory safety equipment that MUST BE WORN AT ALL TIMES when participating in speed skating events and training. Skaters will not be permitted on the ice without it. These items are:

• helmet
• neck guard
• gloves
• knee pads
• shin pads
• cut-proof suit for higher grades
